The opportunity to work with transgender clients is rewarding. However, it can be challenging at times to work with parents and families of these clients. Parents and families may present as confused, resistant, and sometimes aggressive. These are just a few of the common feelings that loved ones may feel when they learn their child or family member is transgender. Many parents and families of transgender loved ones seek counseling for a variety of reasons, such as a desire to learn their loved one’s identity, better understand how they can be supportive, or seek guidance on their lack of support.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Kristie Overstreet will discuss the basic differences in gender identity, common terminology, the role of the clinician, best practices, and effective clinical strategies for working with families of transgender loved ones. Clinicians will learn how to meet the parent and family where they are at in their growth and acceptance of their family member.

At the end of this web conference, clinicians will feel more confident and competent in their clinical skills of working with parents and families. Transgender clients have the best chance of a supportive home environment with family and parents that better understand what they are going through. Clinicians can provide support, knowledge, and resources from this web conference.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Summarize the differences in biological sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual identity, and romantic identity.

  2. Explain common terms related to the LGBTQIA+ community.

  3. Describe the roles of the clinician working with parents and families of transgender clients.

  4. List best practices for working with parents and families of transgender clients.
