More Than Just Medication: Proven Alternative Treatments for ADHD

Presented by Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, PhD, NCC, LMHC on 09-30-2016 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Medication may not always be the answer for individuals diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The amount of information about treatments that are not pharmaceutical in nature can be overwhelming to clinicians who have not had the additional education or training. Mental health professionals may not understand the variety of non-medication treatments available or which ones may be appropriate based on the needs of the individual in therapy.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Stephanie Moulton Sarkis will help clinicians understand the motivations behind why some individuals diagnosed with ADHD prefer not to take medication. She will describe the best practices for assessing the needs of the whole person rather than addressing the diagnosis or disorder alone.

Dr. Sarkis will discuss medications used to treat ADHD while describing their benefits and side effects. She will demonstrate how a clinician can weigh the practical and financial differences between different types of treatments. Dr. Sarkis’ will unravel some of the myths surrounding medication and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise so that clinicians are better able to assist individuals in therapy by helping them make informed choices about their treatment.

This introductory, instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize the benefits and drawbacks of non-medication versus medication treatment for ADHD.
  2. Summarize the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD.
  3. Identify the reasons why many individuals in therapy prefer non-medication treatments.
  4. Assess the safety and efficacy of non-medication treatments for ADHD.
  5. Determine if the benefits of alternative treatments outweigh those of traditional therapies.

I found this seminar to be so practical and pertinent to working with a variety of clients. The aspect that I like the most was that it presented a very balanced approach to offering alternative and well researched natural approaches while not discounting the need for traditional treatments as well. - Monica Bowen, LPC

I found much of the information useful and informative and appreciated the concrete examples of interventions and ways of working with clients. - Nancy Beaney, LMFT
