While discussing such an important topic shouldn&#8217;t be confined to one month out of the year, it offers a great opportunity to reflect on the progress and conversely, persistent barriers that men still face when it comes to seeking professional help.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Men\u2019s Mental Health Picture By the Numbers\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s no secret that men have a lower likelihood of seeking mental health therapy compared to women. In fact, according to an American Psychological Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/stress\/2023\/collective-trauma-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">survey<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, just 35% of men stated they\u2019d seek help from a mental health professional, as opposed to 58% of women.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It should go without saying that men seek therapy not because they suffer from mental health conditions at lower rates. In fact, the opposite is true in many cases. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/infographic-mental-health-men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mental Health America<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, about six million men suffer from depression in the U.S. every year, and men are also more likely to suffer from substance abuse and experience much higher rates of suicide.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Studies have shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6560805\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">men also express symptoms of depression<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that don\u2019t necessarily follow traditional guidelines of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, or DSM. The fear of being perceived as weak or vulnerable is a significant barrier. But times have changed. Surrounding yourself with friends and family that allow you to authentically express yourself and show vulnerability is a big deterrent to depressive symptoms and can act as an antidote to some mental health side effects. Traditionally, the process was so cumbersome that it dissuaded many who were already apprehensive about therapy. But that\u2019s no longer the case.
