And it can be downright depressing, too, as you begin wondering whether the pain will ever subside \u2014 or you\u2019ll be forced to deal with it for the rest of your life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, it\u2019s not uncommon for depression to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/chronic-pain\/coping\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause stress and spiral into anger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as those who suffer wonder what they ever did to deserve their pain. Even worse, the link between chronic pain and suicide is well-documented; 8.8 percent of those who committed suicide between 2003 and 2014 were dealing with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/chronic-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When most people think about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/pain-management\/guide\/pain-management-treatment-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treating chronic pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they think about using drugs, engaging in physical therapy sessions, or trying alternative treatments like acupuncture and reiki healing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While such approaches can certainly help, an increasing number of individuals dealing with chronic pain are trying to heal using a technique called pain reprocessing therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Pain Reprocessing Therapy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapists use pain reprocessing therapy as an approach to chronic pain management helping individuals rewire their brains \u2014 which, in many cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2784694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">causes that pain to subside. <\/a>\u00a0In fact, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2021\/10\/15\/chronic-pain-brain-plasticity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 66 percent of those treated with pain reprocessing therapy were \u201cnearly or fully\u201d pain-free, while 98 percent showed signs of improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, just because someone might <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re experiencing chronic pain doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling chronic pain. In fact, research suggests that chronic pain can be exacerbated by \u2014 or, in some cases, even caused by \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalpainmanagement.com\/patient\/resources\/pain-self-management\/how-brain-causes-chronic-pain-how-stop-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neural pathways in their brains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To illustrate, imagine somebody slips on ice and injures their hip on a cold winter day. This individual is no doubt experiencing serious pain in the aftermath of the injury, and that pain persists for several months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that time, this person\u2019s brain begins to \u201clearn\u201d about the injury and the associated pain.
