Beck<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the aptly named \u201cfather of cognitive behavioral therapy\u201d who\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2728828\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">pioneered the field<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and taught at the University of Pennsylvania and other colleges,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/01\/health\/dr-aaron-t-beck-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">died peacefully in his sleep<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at the impressive age of 100.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Throughout his storied career, Dr. Beck\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beckinstitute.org\/about\/dr-aaron-beck\/#:~:text=Beck%20authored%20and%20co%2Dauthored,Research%20and%20the%20Gustave%20O.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">earned many awards<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, including the prestigious Gustave O. Lienhard Award from the Institute of Medicine. He also co-authored 25 books and upwards of 600 articles over the years and, in 2017, was named the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/almanac.upenn.edu\/articles\/aaron-beck-fourth-in-most-influential-physicians-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">fourth most influential physician<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0over the last century.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 1994, Dr. Beck, along with his daughter Dr. Judith Beck, co-founded the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beckinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Beck Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a nonprofit organization committed to helping people around the world live more fulfilling lives through the promise of cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as CBT.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At a very basic level, CBT is a talking therapy that\u2019s all about helping people solve their problems by understanding how\u00a0the way\u00a0they think about the situation at hand influences how they respond to it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For example, if a small business owner who runs a tight ship gets a letter from the IRS and immediately starts thinking about the worst-case scenario, chances are they will be stressed out and respond irrationally to the circumstances \u2014 much to the chagrin of those in their lives.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By learning that\u00a0the way\u00a0they mentally interpret an\u00a0event influences\u00a0how they\u2019ll physically respond to it, the small business owner might use CBT to retrain how they react to letters from the IRS and remind themselves to take a deep breath the next time one invariably ends up in their mailbox.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to Dr. Beck, the way we think about issues can be established in childhood. And if we think about issues the wrong way, these cognitive errors could lead to problems down the road.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By enrolling in CBT sessions, Dr. Beck believed people could\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/types\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">unlearn these unproductive ways<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of thinking while developing healthier responses to unwelcomed situations. That said, we do have control over how we think about the world and our experience in it. This is why CBT can be particularly helpful \u2014 and why Dr. Beck\u2019s daughter, Dr. Judith Beck, is continuing her father\u2019s work at the Beck Institute.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With that in mind, let\u2019s take a look at some of the main reasons therapists and their clients find CBT to be particularly attractive.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s generally risk-free<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While clients might deal with uncomfortable emotions and sentiments during CBT sessions, this is more or less par for the course when it comes to any form of therapy. Aside from crying, getting upset, and otherwise feeling awkward,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\/about\/pac-20384610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">there\u2019s very little risk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0when patients decide to use CBT to confront the problems they\u2019re facing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">That said, it\u2019s important to remember that CBT is\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">not\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">a quick fix for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/types\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">behavioral and mental health issues<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
