More specifically, 27 percent don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t tell anyone about their symptoms, and 22 percent believe that these conditions aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t serious.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This makes perfect sense given that boomers, who were born between 1946 and 1964, grew up in a time when mental illness was generally a taboo topic. A traumatic event (e.g., a car accident), social isolation (e.g., children growing up and visiting less frequently), or financial concerns that come from a loss of a full-time income can cause some boomers to suffer from anxiety disorders. To this end, it comes as no surprise that\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-8249769\/Graphs-mental-health-generation-suffered-amid-coronavirus-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">one study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00c2\u00a0found that 40 percent of boomers said they were anxious or depressed during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u00ef\u201a\u00b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Substance abuse.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">With fewer responsibilities on their plates and more free time on their hands \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and perhaps a bit of depression and anxiety thrown into the mix \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it follows that some boomers develop\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhpalmbeach.com\/substance-abuse-on-the-rise-with-baby-boomers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">substance abuse issues<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00c2\u00a0in their later years. While we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re optimistic our loved ones won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be impacted directly, the odds that this will happen increase over time.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition to these, boomers can also deal with interpersonal struggles as their relationships take on new dynamics. For example, a father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153little girl\u00e2\u20ac\u009d might be 50 all of a sudden, raising a family of her own while also taking care of dad as a member of the sandwich generation. Gently suggest that they might want to consider talking to an experienced therapist about their issues a couple times to see whether the experience is worthwhile.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">No one has a better idea about how Mom or Dad might react better than you. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t judge them and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t give them advice. Just listen to understand.
