I remember the moment I fell in love with my husband\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwhat I was wearing, how beautiful his eyes looked, the bright, cold February day. I saw the two of us in Technicolor and the rest of the world in black-and-white. It was a heady time; I was crazy in love.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understand the science behind\u00c2\u00a0what was going on in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/brain\" target=\"_blank\">brain<\/a> back then. Neuroscientists have studied madly-in-love folks, putting them in the fMRI machine while they look at a photo of their beloved. The parts of the brain that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153light up\u00e2\u20ac\u009d while looking at the lover are the same brain areas activated by cocaine\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthe reward centers. These researchers concluded that love is like a drug. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never tried cocaine, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve certainly tried love, and it is indeed a high.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26221\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26221\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Mona-Fishbane-150.jpg\" alt=\"Mona Fishbane\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-id=\"26221\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-26221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mona Fishbane, PhD<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We were awash in the chemicals of early love: testosterone (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/hormone\" target=\"_blank\">hormone<\/a> fueling the sex drive in both men and women), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/dopamine\" target=\"_blank\">dopamine<\/a> (focusing on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that special someone\u00e2\u20ac\u009d), and oxytocin (the bonding hormone\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/neurotransmitter\" target=\"_blank\">neurotransmitter<\/a>). I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t notice my lover\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flaws, nor he mine. It turns out that in early love, the critical part of the brain goes quiet. This is the science behind \u00e2\u20ac\u0153love is blind;\u00e2\u20ac\u009d we see our lovers through rose-colored glasses. Perhaps this is nature\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s way of helping us bond with the beloved, oblivious to the problems that lie ahead.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Waking from the Spell<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Crazy in love is a temporary state; the brain can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stand the intensity forever. At some point the critical parts of the brain come back online, and we see our partners, warts and all. The jazzed-up chemicals settle down, and our drug high gives way to a calmer brain state. Romantic love, researchers find, yields to a tamer version, called companionate love. This happens somewhere between a year and three years into a relationship. Many couples are deeply disappointed when their romance fades into a more sedate version. They crave the high of early love, dopamine and all. Some have affairs, or divorce and remarry, seeking another hit of the drug. But eventually the new relationship will become old. The challenge: How to nurture love over the long haul?<strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>From Crazy in Love to Lazy in Love<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When the newness and the magic fade, many of us become lazy in our relationship habits. Instead of dressing up for our beloved, we wear sweats to dinner. We become lazy in our interactions, blaming our partners when upset, not giving them the benefit of the doubt.\u00c2\u00a0 We become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/negativity-bias\" target=\"_blank\">reactive to the negative<\/a>, and overlook the positive in our relationships. We expect unconditional love, no matter what we dish out. But adult love is not unconditional; our partners may leave us if we behave badly.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Proactive Loving vs. Passive Loving<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I still love my wife, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve fallen out of love with her,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a man said to me recently. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s missing the hit of the drug, and is thinking of looking elsewhere for that love high again. To my mind, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153falling out of love\u00e2\u20ac\u009d sounds so passive\u00e2\u20ac\u201dlike falling into a pothole! I propose a more proactive view of long-term love, in which both partners work to create a great relationship. Once the initial glow wears off, the real work of loving begins. The stakes are high; while happy relationships are associated with health and longevity, the stress of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/relationships\" target=\"_blank\">an unhappy marriage<\/a> can result in illness and earlier death. <div class=\"content-fatwidget align-left\">\n\t<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/find-therapist.html\" target=\"_blank\">Find a Therapist for Relationships<\/a><\/h2>\n\t<form action=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/search-redirect.html\" method=\"get\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<input required name=\"search[zipcode]\" placeholder=\"Enter ZIP or City\" class=\"inline-input\" type=\"text\" \/>\n\n\n\t\t\t<input type=\"submit\" name=\"TOS agreement\" value=\" \" class=\"inline-btn\" title=\"Search\" \/>\n\t\t\t<input type=\"hidden\" name=\"search[concern_treated]\" value=\"69\" \/>\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/advanced-search.html\" title=\"Advanced Search\">Advanced Search<\/a>\n\t<\/form>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p>Researchers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/famous-psychologists\/john-gottman.html\" target=\"_blank\">John Gottman<\/a> have identified the secrets to successful relationships. In longitudinal studies, he compared happy couples (he calls them the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153masters\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) and unhappy couples (the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153disasters\u00e2\u20ac\u009d). Happy long-term lovers are emotionally and socially intelligent. They nurture positivity and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get lost in negative reactivity with each other. They are generous, fair, and kind, practicing what I call \u00e2\u20ac\u0153relational virtues.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d When they hurt each other, these successful partners apologize. It turns out that love means having to say you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sorry\u00e2\u20ac\u201da lot!<\/p>\n<h2>Nurturing the Positive in Your Relationship<\/h2>\n<p>So how can couples develop these skills of emotional and social intelligence? One of the most important skills is the ability to regulate your own emotions when you get upset. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so easy to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153let it rip\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and have a temper tantrum when your partner does something you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like. But staying calm in the face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/stress\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a> is vital if you want to be a good lover. You also need to take responsibility for your own reaction rather than blaming your partner. As the wise Roman stoic philosopher, Seneca, said long ago, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Most powerful is the person who has himself in his own power.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Rather than getting into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/right-use-of-power\" target=\"_blank\">power struggles<\/a>, each person can try to be his or her best self in interactions with one another. And partners can make room for mutual empowerment; research shows that happy relationships are more equal and respectful.<\/p>\n<p>Happy couples do a lot to cultivate a positive tone in their relationship. This can be challenging, though, because our brains are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/bias\" target=\"_blank\">biased<\/a> toward the negative\u00e2\u20ac\u201dbetter safe than sorry, so we notice an attack or danger more readily than we see the lovely things our partners may offer us. To counteract this negativity bias, many psychologists now encourage actively focusing on, noticing, and savoring the positive. One couple I know has a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Blessings Jar;\u00e2\u20ac\u009d each time they notice something positive the other one does, they jot a note and put it in the jar.<\/p>\n<p>For couples caught up in cycles of negativity, unable to notice the positive and having difficulty regulating their own emotions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/marriage-counseling.html\" target=\"_blank\">couple therapy<\/a> can be enormously helpful. Most people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t act in nasty ways intentionally; they get triggered in interactions with their partners, and have a meltdown. And then they may blame their partners for the whole mess. Therapy can help partners take responsibility for their behavior, learn skills of emotional and social intelligence, and cultivate positivity. This is empowering, as they share the responsibility for building a relationship in which they can flourish. Rather than feeling like victims who blame each other, these couples become co-authors of their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: To be a good long-term lover, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no free lunch, and there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no free love. Love that lasts takes work.
