One&#8217;s behavior is generally considered to be good, bad, or neutral.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Behavior?<\/h2>\n<p>Behavior is the unifying concept for all subfields of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/psychology\">psychology<\/a>. Typically, action\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwhich\u00c2\u00a0may be emotional, social, or physical\u00e2\u20ac\u201dis required in order to maintain the current state of affairs or to elicit change.<\/p>\n<p>There are many factors that\u00c2\u00a0may have an influence on behavior:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00c2\u00a0identity of the person producing the behavior<\/li>\n<li>The circumstances the person wants to bring about<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of what is permissible<\/li>\n<li>Skill, competency, or know-how<\/li>\n<li>The procedure involved<\/li>\n<li>The outcome (which may or may not coincide with the circumstances the person wants to bring about)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/personality\">Personality<\/a> traits<\/li>\n<li>The significance of the behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many researchers believe that genetics and the surrounding environment also play major roles in the development and expression of behavior.<\/p>\n<h2>Behavior and Mental Health<\/h2>\n<p>Behavior is often a major indicator of mental health, and a person&#8217;s behavior may be heavily influenced by physiological, social, cognitive, and emotional factors. A state of good mental health is often associated with behaviors that\u00c2\u00a0are functional, productive, positive, and beneficial to the individual.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, when one&#8217;s mental health is negatively affected by some factor, this can result in behavior often\u00c2\u00a0considered to be\u00c2\u00a0negative, maladaptive, or even harmful to the person experiencing mental health concerns.\u00c2\u00a0People of all ages may be affected by temporary behavioral issues; however, these issues may be especially noticeable during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/child-and-adolescent-issues\">childhood and adolescence<\/a>. The presence of temporary maladaptive behaviors can\u00c2\u00a0indicate the child or teen may benefit from\u00c2\u00a0in dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/stress\">stressful<\/a> stimuli.<\/p>\n<p>Common behavioral issues that might\u00c2\u00a0affect young people include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Threatening behavior toward pets, other individuals, or the self<\/li>\n<li>Acts of vandalism<\/li>\n<li>Regular tantrums or arguments<\/li>\n<li>Hostile behavior toward those\u00c2\u00a0in authority<\/li>\n<li>Stealing<\/li>\n<li>Persistent or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/pseudologia-fantastica\">compulsive lying<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Lack of effort in academic pursuits<\/li>\n<li>Truancy<\/li>\n<li>Smoking, drinking, and\/or illicit drug use at an early age<\/li>\n<li>Sexual activity at an early age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Children experiencing behavioral concerns may have an\u00c2\u00a0increased risk for mental health concerns\u00c2\u00a0such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/anxiety\">Anxiety<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/depression\">Depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/drug-and-substance-abuse\">Substance dependency<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/suicide\">Suicidal ideation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Behavior and Therapy<\/h2>\n<p>Today, there are a number of types of therapy that can help individuals who wish to adapt or modify certain aspects of their behavior.\u00c2\u00a0Many people who find their own behavior to be\u00c2\u00a0negative, counterproductive, or harmful in some way may obtain benefit from exploring the behavior and its potential causes with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/find-therapist.html\">qualified mental health professional<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/types\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\">Cognitive behavioral therapy<\/a> is\u00c2\u00a0one\u00c2\u00a0type of treatment that\u00c2\u00a0is known to be effective at treating a variety of mental health concerns. CBT helps individuals\u00c2\u00a0in therapy think and behave in a more positive manner. The approach assumes thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and works to help people in therapy\u00c2\u00a0gradually change\u00c2\u00a0negative thought patterns in order to begin to feel better and react more constructively to stressful situations.\u00c2\u00a0Cognitive behavioral therapy can\u00c2\u00a0be completed in\u00c2\u00a0a relatively short period of time. A typical session,\u00c2\u00a0usually held weekly or biweekly, lasts for 30-60 minutes, and generally\u00c2\u00a0individuals participate in 5-20 sessions.<\/p>\n<h2>Underserved Behavioral Health Needs<\/h2>\n<p>Unmet mental and behavioral health needs for youth in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/adoption\">foster care<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/aging\">elderly<\/a> Americans are two of the most pressing health care concerns in the United States today.<\/p>\n<p>Many mental health professionals believe the consistent presence of at least one nurturing parent or caregiver is crucial to good behavioral health in children and teenagers. It is generally believed youth have more of an opportunity to thrive when\u00c2\u00a0reasonable routines, structure, and expectations are in place in daily life and when caregivers display love and support. Young people in foster care are more likely to have experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/ptsd\">traumatic events<\/a> in their life, and the stress of handling major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/change\">transitions<\/a>, coping with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/grief\">loss<\/a> or separation, and dealing with general uncertainty may have a significant negative impact on overall mental health. However, those in foster care are often less likely to receive needed mental health care due to\u00c2\u00a0frequent transitions, lack of consent, and\u00c2\u00a0insurance issues, all of which may severely restrict access to care.<\/p>\n<p>There is also an ever-increasing need for mental health services for older Americans. Behavioral health concerns affecting this population include anxiety, alcohol misuse, depression, suicide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/alzheimer-disease\">Alzheimer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/dementia\">dementia<\/a>. According to the American Psychological Association, only about 4% of all psychologists specialize in\u00c2\u00a0geropsychology, the branch of psychology focusing on\u00c2\u00a0the aging process and clinical care for\u00c2\u00a0mature adults.
