Individuals who are the object of stigma may\u00a0experience negative attitudes from the general population (public stigma) or from themselves (self-stigma). These negative beliefs may lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/stereotype\">stereotyping<\/a>, social prejudice, and acts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/prejudice-discrimination\">discrimination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals may be stigmatized because of their ethnicity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/gender\">gender<\/a>, age, socioeconomic status, religion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/sexual-orientation\">sexual orientation<\/a>, physical health, mental health, and so on. Many people who are stigmatized by others\u00a0report experiencing\u00a0feelings of distress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/shame\">shame<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/self-doubt\">self-doubt<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/hopelessness\">hopelessness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Stigmatization of Mental Health\u00a0Concerns<\/h2>\n<p>Many individuals experiencing chronic mental health conditions\u00a0may face, in addition to symptoms that may be long-lasting\u00a0or debilitating and are often\u00a0difficult to deal with, the added challenge of public stigma, which arises in many cases due to misconceptions about mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>At present, there exist\u00a0a variety of stigmas associated with mental health challenges.\u00a0Individuals with mental health issues are often perceived by society to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/aggression-violence\">violent<\/a>, incapable of caring for themselves or others, or in\u00a0possession of a weak character. Because many societies places great emphasis on traits such as strength, endurance, and independence, people may avoid seeking therapy due to fears that they will be labeled as weak or inferior; treated differently by family or friends; blocked from housing, employment, or insurance opportunities; or fired as a result of their condition. Individuals may also fear stigmatization or discrimination in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/workplace-issues\">workplace<\/a>, public harassment, or increased self-doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Stigmatization of mental health concerns is often prevalent in institutions that\u00a0promote a \u201cmacho\u201d culture and high levels of excellence. Service members and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/veterans-mental-health-issues\">veterans<\/a> with serious health issues such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/traumatic-brain-injury\">traumatic brain injury (TMI)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/ptsd\">posttraumatic stress (PTSD)<\/a>\u00a0have been shown to be less likely to seek\u00a0mental health treatment than civilian individuals who face\u00a0similar challenges.<\/p>\n<h2>The Effects of Stigma<\/h2>\n<p>Discrimination as a result of stigma can have a negative effect on mental health. A person who has been stigmatized may put up with physical or verbal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/abuse\">abuse<\/a>; experience low self-esteem or feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/fear\">fear<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/guilt\">guilt<\/a>, and shame; and become socially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/isolation\">isolated<\/a>. Individuals may also come to believe that they are somehow lesser than others and experience low self-worth, which may have the added effect of\u00a0making it difficult for them to seek help.<\/p>\n<p>Even trained mental health professionals may be susceptible to subtle stereotypes. Stigmatization from a mental health professional may lead one to leave therapy before treatment is completed and avoid seeking further treatment, and fear of rejection or the possibility of experiencing socioeconomic disadvantages may prevent some\u00a0individuals from attempting to seek help.<\/p>\n<p>Stigma or discrimination on the part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/what-is-family\">family<\/a> or friends can cause\u00a0feelings of\u00a0isolation. A person may feel unaccepted or experience feelings of depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/stress\">stress<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/anxiety\">anxiety<\/a>. Family members may also influence a person&#8217;s desire to seek treatment, and some people\u00a0may be pressured to enter an institution or seek a type of therapy they would not have chosen for themselves.<\/p>\n<h2>Coping with Stigma<\/h2>\n<p>An individual who faces stigma due to mental health challenges, or for any reason, may\u00a0experience\u00a0stress or other distress. When facing persistent stigma, it may be difficult for one to remember\u00a0that illness is not a defining characteristic. An ethical and supportive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/find-therapist.html\">therapist or other mental health professional<\/a> can help a person maintain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/confidence\">confidence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/self-esteem\">self-esteem<\/a>\u00a0through therapy and provide them with accurate information about mental illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>People who have\u00a0been taught that mental illness stems from personal weakness or who have\u00a0encountered other stigmatizing or discriminatory beliefs can learn otherwise in treatment. Some may find it helpful to share this information with family and friends and may find it helpful to only seek the company of supportive friends and family, when possible.<\/p>\n<p>Those who feel comfortable doing so may\u00a0share some information about their mental health condition with others. Disclosing one&#8217;s personal experience with mental illness can help others become aware of and reduce their own stigma. A support group may be of benefit to some individuals who do not feel safe or comfortable sharing details of their mental health condition and treatment process with people from their personal\u00a0lives.<\/p>\n<h2>Reducing and Preventing Stigma<\/h2>\n<p>Stigmatization, like prejudice and discrimination, often stems from ignorance. Many individuals may fear mental illness because they know very little about mental health conditions and their effects. A person who finds themselves discriminating against another individual or group for any reason may find it helpful to examine their own prejudices and become more informed. Obtaining knowledge about a particular group of people, disability, illness, or other issue can often reduce one&#8217;s stigma.<\/p>\n<p>Being aware of the following may help one become aware of personal attitudes and beliefs that lead to stigma:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Individuals do not experience mental illness through any fault of their own.<\/li>\n<li>Statistics show that\u00a0few individuals with diagnosed mental health conditions become violent.<\/li>\n<li>A person cannot tell that another person <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">has a mental health condition by looking.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Mental health conditions may affect an individual in many different ways.<\/li>\n<li>Not all people experiencing depression, or any other mental illness, will engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/self-harm\">self-harming behaviors<\/a> or have thoughts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/suicide\">suicide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Labeling or judging those who face mental health concerns can cause significant harm.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking out against mental health stigma can help prevent further stigmatization.<\/li>\n<li>Therapy or therapy in combination with medication can effectively treat or manage most mental health conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Information about mental health conditions obtained from movies and television is not always accurate.<\/li>\n<li>A mental health professional is the only person who can diagnose a mental health condition.<\/li>\n<li>Using terms such as &#8220;insane,&#8221; &#8220;crazy,&#8221; and &#8220;wacko&#8221; may further stigma of mental health conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Corrigan, P.
