As many of 20% of those who have Alzheimer&#8217;s may experience sundowning.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is\u00a0Sundowning?<\/h2>\n<p>An individual who is &#8220;sundowning&#8221; may often feel more confused as the evening sets in. This confusion is believed to occur as a result of Alzheimer&#8217;s effects on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/brain\">brain<\/a>, but the phenomenon is not entirely understood. Sundowning can occur as\u00a0a symptom of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease\u00a0and other forms of dementia. It\u00a0appears most often during the middle stages of Alzheimer&#8217;s but diminishes as the condition advances.<\/p>\n<p>Sundowning may lead an individual to experience (in the evening) the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased restlessness and agitation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/personality\" target=\"_blank\">Personality<\/a> changes<\/li>\n<li>Increased difficulties with memory<\/li>\n<li>Disorientation<\/li>\n<li>Changes in sleep patterns, nighttime restlessness, sleep disturbances<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/anxiety\" target=\"_blank\">Anxiousness<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What Causes Sundowning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The evening can be a challenging time for people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\">dementia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental and physical fatigue tends to exacerbate memory problems.<\/li>\n<li>A person with dementia may pick up on the stress and fatigue of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/caregiver-issues\">caregiver<\/a> and react with agitation or confusion.<\/li>\n<li>Nutritional issues can also cause sundowning. When those who have Alzheimer&#8217;s or another form of dementia have a disrupted meal schedule\u00a0or eat a large meal late in the day, they may\u00a0experience greater upset in the evening.<\/li>\n<li>Because many people with dementia live in assisted living facilities or with caregivers, they face the added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/stress\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a> of an unfamiliar location.<\/li>\n<li>Decreased light and increased shadows can make it more difficult to focus on and remember settings, making disorientation more of a concern when there is less light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How Is\u00a0Sundowning Treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is no cure for either sundowning or dementia, but some medications may help. Regular meals can decrease the likelihood of sundowning. A well-regulated schedule can also reduce fatigue and the stress of an unfamiliar environment. Exercise, regular exposure to sunlight, and increased activity during the day may also help.<\/p>\n<p>Some people with sundowning experience an improvement when they reduce their intake of caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and other chemical substances. However, a sudden change or complete elimination of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/addictions-and-compulsions\">addictive substance<\/a> can increase agitation and contribute to sundowning.<\/p>\n<p>People with dementia have been shown to thrive\u00a0on routine and familiarity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/learn-about-therapy\/issues\/caregiver-issues\" target=\"_blank\">Caregivers<\/a> who provide a comforting, loving environment and allow\u00a0people with dementia some control over their daily activities may find that this helps some individuals\u00a0cope more effectively with symptoms of dementia, and this may reduce the frequency of sundowning or make it less severe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mayo Clinic Staff.
