Mental Health Charities to Receive Ron Artest’s NBA Salary

Many celebrities donate time and money to charities that they believe in. But the NBA’s Ron Artest is going above and beyond to support a cause near and dear to him: mental health. All within the past year, he’s auctioned off his NBA Championship ring to “put more psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists in schools.” He publicly thanked his own therapist for playing a large role in his personal and athletic success. He’s appeared at benefits. And most recently, Artest has announced that he’s donating “either all or some” of the coming season’s salary (which totals $6.79 million) to mental health awareness organizations. Artest’s financial and personal support of counseling and therapy, especially for youth, is a fine example of putting a celebrity paycheck to good use.

A big round of applause for Mr. Artest and his generosity! His family must be very proud of him. The publicity generated for mental health organizations is very welcome too.

He’s a great example of how dealing with mental health challenges need not hold you back in life. I tip my hat to you Ron for performing such a selfless action and on behalf of all of us who do our best to live and cope with mental health issues and one day hopefully thrive despite them, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Bravo! Now if he could just convince his teammates to do the same. :) The mental health groups must feel like Santa’s arrived early.

Very nice to hear of someone who is rich and famous putting his money and status to good use and not just blowing the same on fancy cars and houses!

Wow…That’s a big amount of money! And it is all the more valuable when all the fund sources are drying up and even the state and federal governments tightening budgets.

Awesome! Finally a big name really paying it forward and putting their money where their mouth is!

Kudos to Ron Artest for doing this at a time when people are keeping their purses closed and expect to be paid even to be present at an event for charity…

such a large influx of money into these institutions is a good thing but the spending needs to be transparent and on core issues only.

I really do hope that this athlete and others like him continue to follow through with theri promises. It is in this way that a readl difference can be made. Non profit organizations do what they can with the little funding that they receive but imagine the boost that a few donations like this could make in the outreach and the education that they would be able to then provide. This makes me smile :)
