Effective Approaches for the Treatment of Disordered Eating

Presented by Laura Choate, EdD, LPC-S on 09-21-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Disordered eating remains a major public health concern. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating are mental health issues with significant biopsychosocial consequences, including potentially deadly medical complications.

Despite the prevalence rates for full syndrome eating disorders being relatively low, they follow a chronic course, with poor treatment outcomes, high rates of remission, and high mortality rates. However, disordered eating behaviors and negative body image are far more common, and these problems are also associated with a host of negative physical and psychological consequences.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Laura Choate will provide an overview of current evidence-based treatments for disordered eating, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT). In addition, given emerging interest in treatments that focus on mindfulness and acceptance, Dr. Choate will also discuss applying dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) to the treatment of disordered eating.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Assess a client’s needs regarding negative body image, disordered eating concerns, and potential eating disorders.
  2. Explain the tenets of CBT treatment for disordered eating.
  3. Apply IPT to the treatment of disordered eating.
  4. Utilize DBT in the treatment of disordered eating.
  5. Discuss emerging mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches as applied to the treatment of disordered eating, including ACT and MBCT.
