About Kirkland

Kirkland is the 6th largest municipality in King County and the 13th largest in Washington State. The city was founded in 1888. Kirkland is located on the shores of Lake Washington and has a land area of 18 square miles. The city is named after Peter Kirk, a British-born steel tycoon. 

Kirkland is home to 88,000 people. From 2010 to 2016 the population grew by 9%. Twenty-one percent of all residents are foreign-born. The ethnic composition of the population is 74% white, 13% Asian, 7% Hispanic, and 1% black. Approximately 3,800 Spanish speakers, 2,300 Chinese speakers, and 1,400 Russian speakers live in Kirkland.

Fifty-eight percent of adults in Kirkland who are over the age of 25 have earned a bachelor’s degree. The mean annual wage is $52,000, and the median household income is $96,000. Roughly 7% of residents in Kirkland live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Kirkland

Poorly funded mental health services and the rising cost of housing have contributed to a homelessness crisis in King County. An estimated 40% of homeless individuals have mental health issues.
