About Federal Way

Federal Way is a city in King County, Washington. It is situated between the Green River Valley and Puget Sound. Federal Way has a land area of 22 square miles. The city was incorporated in 1990. 

Federal Way has 97,000 inhabitants. The population increased by 8% from 2010 to 2016. Around one in four adults over age 25 has a bachelor’s degree. The ethnic composition of Federal Way is 49% white, 18% Hispanic, 14% Asian, and 11% Black.

Foreign-born people account for 23% of Federal Way’s population. Roughly 88% of residents are American citizens. Thirty-three percent of residents have a native language that is not English. Federal Way is home to 10,500 Spanish speakers, 4,000 Korean speakers, and 1,700 Vietnamese speakers.

Mental Health in Federal Way

Valley Cities has behavioral health centers throughout King County, including in Federal Way.  Valley Cities offers mental health first aid training to residents. The 8-hour course helps people to recognize when others are having a mental health crisis. It also teaches participants how to support people in crisis and refer them to a mental health professional. 

Valley Cities also provides training in youth mental health first aid. The program helps residents provide care for young people with mental health concerns or substance use issues. Topics include depression, eating and food issues, ADHD, and anxiety.
