About Apex

Apex is a town in Wake County, North Carolina. Its name is based on its location along the highest point of the Chatham Railroad. Apex has a land area of 15 square miles. The town was incorporated in 1873.

Apex has a population of 50,500 people. The population grew by 34% from 2010 to 2017. The median age in the town is 36 years old.

The racial composition of Apex is 74% white, 8% black, 8% Hispanic and 7% Asian. Eleven percent of residents were born in a foreign country. Over 14% of residents speak a native language other than English. There are 1,900 Spanish speakers and 650 Chinese speakers in Apex. 

In 2015, Apex was ranked #1 on Money Magazine's list of the best places to live in the United States. People in Apex earn a mean annual wage of $38,900. The median household income is $95,300. Roughly 5% of residents live below the poverty line. 

Mental Health in Apex

The Apex Police Department participates in safe prescription drug disposal program. Citizens are urged to bring unwanted or expired medications to the police department’s lobby. The disposal program aims to reduce substance addiction and contamination of the city’s water supply. In 2016, Apex police officers safely disposed of 637 pounds of drugs.

The police department also works closely with SAFEchild. SAFEchild is a community center that assists children who have been abused, providing both physical and psychological care. SAFEchild has offered free evaluations for many youths who have come into contact with the police department. In a 2016 fundraising effort, the Apex Police Department raised more than $6,000 for SAFEchild.
