Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California. It is situated in the San Ramon Valley at 131 feet above sea level. Once known as “The Corners,” the city was renamed “Walnut Creek” in 1862 after the abundance of walnut trees in the area. Walnut Creek has a land area of 20 square miles and was incorporated in 1914.

Walnut Creek has roughly 70,000 inhabitants. From 2010 to 2016, the number of residents increased by 8%. Around 4,800 military veterans live in the city. The ethnic composition of the Walnut Creek population is 71% white, 14% Asian, 9% Hispanic, and 2% black.

In 2017, the Walnut Creek city council made arrangements for a two-person Coordinated Outreach, Referral, and Engagement (CORE) team to assist homeless people in the city. CORE teams work under the supervision of the Contra Costa Health Services. The outreach workers explore creek banks and freeway overpasses to find homeless individuals who need assistance.

In addition to walking the streets, the CORE team also visits homeless camps and shelters. It connects homeless individuals with local resources for mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, medical care, and other services.
