Tarzana is a community in Los Angeles County, California. It covers 9 square miles. Tarzana was founded by fiction writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. The city is named after Burrough’s fictional character Tarzan.

Tarzana has a population of 38,000 people. The population density is roughly 4,000 individuals per square mile. The racial composition of Tarzana is 71% white, 15% Latinx, 5% Asian, and 4% black. Roughly 2,600 military veterans live in Tarzana, making up 9% of the population.

Thirty-five percent of people in Tarzana are foreign-born. The most common foreign places of birth are Iran and Mexico. The most prevalent ancestries are Iranian (10%) and Russian (9%). 

Forty percent of Tarzana residents age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree. The median age of residents is 38 years. The median household income in Tarzana is $73,200. Fifty-nine percent of families own their home. 

Mental Health in Tarzana

Residents in Tarzana may soon benefit from increased mental health services. The Los Angeles city council has approved a $542 million expansion of the Providence Tarzana Medical Center. A $75 million fundraising campaign has been launched to help finance the project. To date, roughly $5 million has been raised.

The expansion will include a larger emergency department, a new patient wing, and larger diagnosis facilities. The medical center is committed to increasing its homeless outreach and mental health services. The project will be completed in 2022.
