A diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) can be stressful for any individual and may motivate a person to enter therapy. Both of these conditions can require extensive mental health care in addition to medical treatment. It is essential for mental health professionals to understand the multifaceted issues facing people diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS and utilize effective treatment strategies.
In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Juliana Deans PhD, LPC, LMHC, NCC will discuss solution-oriented approaches therapists can use with individuals diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS. Dr. Deans will explore Bill O’Hanlon’s ideas of solution-oriented therapy. These include addressing a person’s potential to change, helping them express their feelings, and teaching them to cope with adversity in a positive manner.

Dr. Juliana Deans has a PhD in marriage and family therapy from Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. She also has a Master of Science in marriage and family therapy and a Master of Science in mental health counseling from Palm Beach Atlantic University in South Florida.
Dr. Deans is currently a licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), and a national certified counselor (NCC). She has been working with diverse populations in various settings since 2001. Her professional experiences involve providing clinical services to individuals, groups, couples, and families. She also supervises graduate-level therapists who are working toward state licensure.
