Sex Therapy 101: An Introductory Guide for Couples Therapists

Presented by Amanda Pasciucco, LMFT on 02-26-2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Our sexuality holds important information about who we are and how we behave to meet our needs. It contains our fantasies, our fears, trauma, body esteem, techniques, and communication between sexual partners.

In this 2-hour continuing webinar, Amanda Pasciucco, LMFT will provide couples counselors and therapists with an understanding of how to use beginner sex therapy interventions with common couples cases. With a particular lens from a holistic sex educator approach, Amanda will outline the PLISSIT model of therapy--an evidence-based framework for addressing sexual issues--to provide new clinical interventions to couples counseling that offers a diverse and inclusive systemic perspective. She will review the PLISSIT model stages (for which the PLISSIT abbreviation is derived): permission, limited information, specific suggestions, and intensive therapy.

Through a multi-technique, sex-positive approach, Amanda will describe strategies clinicians can use to improve the sexual lives of their clients, and see that this often carries into a systemic transformation for the couples.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Describe the systemic impact of how cultural narratives affect one's view of romantic relationships.
  2. Outline at least three specific therapeutic solutions to solve the emotional distress within partnered couples’ bedrooms.
  3. List therapeutic techniques and tips to help overcome basic couples issues.
  4. Review the evidence-based approach of the PLISSIT model to use with individuals and couples with sexual dysfunction.
  5. Identify when to refer out when the case is beyond a couples therapy case and is a sexual dysfunction case.
