By understanding what mindfulness is, and by using this technique in session, therapists can better help their clients stay present, centered, and able to progress in therapy. Additionally, these techniques can be used by therapists themselves in order to stay connected and present in session with their clients.
In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Sara Rothleder, LCSW-C will define mindfulness and provide an overview of using this type of work in therapy sessions. Sara will discuss three states of mind: Reasonable Mind, Emotion Mind, and Wise Mind. Additionally, she will teach “what” and “how” skills for therapists to use in session.
Sara will also share and discuss a useful acronym that provides an easy way to remember important aspects of mindfulness. She will explain mindfulness strategies and important factors for leading mindfulness in sessions that therapists can use and review how therapists can implement them in their work. She will also lead participants through different mindfulness exercises that can be used in session immediately.
This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:
Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program presents clinical interventions that combines established psychotherapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with principles and techniques from the field of Mindfulness. It is consistent with the ethics code of the Board of Social Work. This program discusses strategies for applying the methods taught in a clinically responsible manner, although the presenter may not know how to apply all principles discussed to every situation or person and should be determined by the providing clinician directly. Generally, mindfulness methods are effective and safe for many clients. As always, however, misapplication of any interventions with mentally vulnerable populations can lead to harmful outcomes.
Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: The presenter conducts trainings, provides Administrative services, and provides community outreach for Gaithersburg Counseling Center.
