When faced with the aftermath of an affair, couples often feel lost in a flood of different emotions. Research shows that the injured party most often experiences symptoms consistent with posttraumatic stress. It can be incredibly difficult for therapists to help couples cope with reoccurring flashbacks, resentment, and a host of other emotions. Couples that struggle with the aftermath of an affair will need to develop effective strategies to help them heal and rebuild trust again.
Different types of affairs have different paths to healing and forgiveness. This web conference will help to determine the different types of infidelity and an emphasis will be placed on discovering triggers and risk factors that can lead to infidelity. Dr. Louis will discuss how therapists can effectively explore the impact of the affair using cognitive behavioral therapy, how the therapist can facilitate marital recovery, and the different types of therapeutic tools to help couples find new meaning.
Drawing on the research of Leone (2013), Piercy, Dolbin-MacNab, Richards (2011) and others, Dr. Louis will provide practical tools for helping couples bring meaning to their situation and gain clarity on the risk and protective factors related to affairs. Lastly, participants will discover how to instill hope in couples, and how to rebuild trust on a path to forgiveness.
This web conference is introductory instructional level and designed to help clinicians:
