Emotionally Focused Therapy: Recognizing and Healing Attachment Distress in Couples Work

Presented by Rebecca Jorgensen, PhD on 07-20-2012 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 10:30 a.m. Pacific (1:30 p.m. Eastern)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is a collaborative and respectful form of therapy as well as a leading form of marital therapy treatment. EFT is designed as a structured and short-term approach (between eight and twenty sessions). There is a substantial history of research highlighting EFT's effectiveness. Research indicates that 70-75% of studied couples transition from marital distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. There is also research on the change process and predictors of success.

EFT is based on a clear, explicit attachment conceptualization of adult love and marital distress. Empirical research on the nature of marital distress and adult attachment supports these conceptualizations. Change strategies and interventions are specific and clear, and key moments and moves in the change process have been mapped out into nine distinct steps and three stages of change.

The goals of EFT are to:

  1. Re-organize and expand partners' key emotional responses;
  2. Shift partner’s interactional positions and start new patterns of interaction;
  3. Allow a secure bond to be created between partners.

This presentation provides an overview of the theory and practice of Emotionally Focused Therapy with special emphasis on the attachment and attachment affect in this systems framework. The objective of this workshop is for participants to gain a basic understanding of how attachment theory and attachment framed affect combines to heal couple distress in Emotionally Focused Therapy.

This introductory web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Explain the unique power attachment theory brings to understanding couple distress;
  2. Describe how couple distress becomes self-maintaining;
  3. Apply a system perspective to create the first change event in healing couple distress;
  4. Utilize the unique power attachment framed affect has in healing couple distress to create secure attachment.
