The population of Muslims in Western societies continue to grow amid a challenging global political and social climate. It is imperative to develop a better understanding of the mental health needs of this community. Muslims in the United States face unique challenges and barriers when it comes to accessing mental health care, specifically psychotherapy services.
In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Jamila Oden, MEd, LPC returns to share a follow up to her presentation Ethical and Cultural Competence: Working with Arab and Muslim Clients.* Jamila will expand on best practices and ethical considerations for mental health and addiction professionals when working with Muslim populations. She will also take a closer look at culturally unique aspects of Ethnic Arab Muslims.
Incorporating cultural competence into treatment can improve therapeutic decision making. It can also offer alternative ways to define and plan a treatment program that is firmly directed toward progress and recovery as defined by both the counselor and the client.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily on research publications which specifically address topics of cultural competency and ethical considerations when working with Muslim clients, and on the ethics codes of these professional organizations: APA and ACA. Contents are also guided by statements from leadership in those organizations. Up-to-date statistics were gathered from the PEW Research Center and website. Some interpretation and analysis presented is made by the presenter, in consultation with knowledgeable colleagues and expert consultants. This program discusses research supported best clinical and psychotherapy practices for use with Muslim clients. It may not include information on all applicable state laws.

Jamila Oden, MEd, LPC is a licensed professional counselor in private practice in Oklahoma City. Jamila earned her Master in Education from Oklahoma City University in 2012 and obtained her professional counseling license in 2014.
Jamila has over 10 years of experience working within the community mental health field, both in Minnesota and in Oklahoma. Jamila has received extensive training in multiple evidence-based psychotherapies including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. Jamila is also a board approved LPC supervisor and enjoys providing clinical supervision to therapists in training.
Jamila has an intrinsic and intimate understanding of Muslim and Arab cultures, as well as partial fluency in Arabic. She is passionate about clarifying misconceptions and promoting understanding of these vibrant, beautiful, and important cultures.
