Clinical Focus on Borderline Personality Disorder

Presented by Philip Feldman, PhD, LCSW on 03-17-2023 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Clients with Borderline Personality commonly seek treatment and clinicians often struggle to work with them effectively. These clients can be challenging and disruptive.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar for therapists, Dr. Philip Feldman will provide an overview of the etiology of Borderline Personality, symptoms, and specific details about evidence-based treatment practices. Participants will learn about underlying dynamics and comorbid diagnoses that play a key role in the clients’ presenting problems, symptoms, and behaviors. This course will also focus on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which is empirically validated and very effective.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health clinicians:

  1. Identify three effective interventions to use with clients who have Borderline Personality.
  2. Describe two common Borderline behaviors that often interfere with therapy.
  3. Discuss the role of shame and anger as underlying emotional problems for individuals with Borderline Personality.
  4. Identify four ways to use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) interventions effectively.
  5. Describe three etiological factors that can lead to the development of Borderline Personality.

Statement of program material’s accuracy, utility, and risks: Dr. Feldman has 30 years of clinical experience and has conducted extensive research on Shame affect and Borderline Personality. The material in this course is based on empirically-validated research. Sources include work by Marsha Linehan, Donald Nathanson, and Michael Stone. The findings and clinical interventions are pragmatic and can be highly effective for clinicians who work with this population. A body of research surveyed in this course suggests that the methods are effective and safe for this population. However, misapplication of the concepts with various populations could lead to unintended outcomes.

Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: None.
