In my opinion, the purpose of psychotherapy is to help a person experience life from his or her own bright side. Difficulties or trauma's often stem from beliefs that a person holds for the truth, while that belief might not be accurate. Childhood beliefs and values that are no longer adequate in present situations can cast shadows over a persons self esteem or self confidence, or on any other belief about one self or on life in general. Those beliefs might have been good in the past, because they triggered a certain behavior, but they have lost their expiry date. Behavior change comes from a change of your belief system and change in the way you go about your value system. So the purpose of psychotherapy in my opinion, is to put things in their right place and learn or practice how to live life from there.
A therapist should be in the role of attentive listener first. My role is to listen carefully, refrain from placing my clients word by my own reference or experience. Refrain from comparing cases or situations. I believe in the unique character of every person that I meet, there for I should not look for anwers else where outside that character. I can help people find their answers by asking the right questions. That is my role as a counselor, ask the right questions so that people can learn what ever is necessary for them to heal or develope personally.
I think that a client in need of professional help, should feel at ease with their therapist. During the intake session there should be a click, a mutual understanding of equality. The therapist might be a specialist on his or her terrain, which is important, still that does not make him or her know anything more the the client. A clients should feel the therapist's presence as save and confidential, so that he or she can open up completely. A client also needs to know about the schooling the therapist has had and how many years of experience the therapist has. Fresh therapists can be as good as more experienced ones, that makes it a bit difficult. The therapist should always be very clear about their experiece.
