Mental Health in Puyallup

Puyallup and Pierce County are both affected by the drug epidemic sweeping the country. Between 2008 and 2014, the number of heroin-related fatalities in the county increased by 100%. In 2015, the county experienced 10.2 opioid-related deaths for every 100,000 people. This was slightly higher than the rate for Washington state (9.8 per 100,000).

In response to the opioid crisis, the Puyallup Police Department installed a take-back bin for unused or expired prescription drugs. This allows for the safe disposal of unwanted medications. Other bins have been installed at pharmacies and other law enforcement offices throughout Pierce County. Since 2010, county officials have collected over 43,000 pounds of unwanted prescription medication.
