Dealing with interpersonal difficulties and inner-conflicts form the core of my work. Many emotional difficulties are rooted in these two things which are themselves often rooted in adaptations to ones early environment. These adaptations may have been very helpful at some point but they are sometimes slow to update as our lives change. Psychotherapy allows the client and therapist to observe how the therapeutic relationship unfolds and this provides an opportunity to develop an awareness of how struggles outside the room come into to being. Much of my training and experience has been in this area. Working in this way often results in reduced depression, panic and anxiety and it, in the long term, helps clients find and sustain more fulfilling relationships.
Psychotherapy is ultimately the establishment of a safe and therapeutic relationship in which a client can, in a sustained way, begin to talk about and explore matters that they would not be able to do with a member of their family or with their friends. This space allows two (or more minds) to come together to think about and understand matters in new and liberating ways. This might involve recognising feelings that have been longs since forgotten, developing new perspectives on things, understanding why a person acts in ways that seem counter productive, or even developing deeper levels of emotional maturity.
I love the possibility of connecting with another human being in an honest and non-judgemental way that can help both the client and myself remember what it really means to be human.
To listen to both the client's words and the effect they have on me and then to try to translate this experiences into something that might allow both of us to discover or acknowledge something new.
