Using Your Power to Make the World Safe:
From the Inside Out Presented by Judith Barr, MS, LPC, LMHC

Web Conference Description

When we experience intense, raw feelings, oftentimes only a small portion of these intense feelings are here and now. The larger share of those intense, deep, raw feelings can be from long ago in our childhoods, and many here and now situations - both minor and major events - can trigger these feelings from long ago that we haven't yet healed and resolved.

On occasions when a past feeling is evoked, if we utilize that opportunity to follow the feeling for the purpose of healing, it can change us within and changes the world around us at the same time. In our journey to heal our relationship with power, there is great benefit to addressing these feelings as they are triggered in our lives, both through committing not to act on them, and also following them to the root for healing.

As therapists whose relationship with power can affect not only ourselves and those close to us, but also our clients, we especially have a responsibility to learn to draw the boundary between feeling and action, and to do the inner work to heal these intense feelings within ourselves. In this way, we can help ensure the safety of our clients in their own healing journey, help our clients heal their own relationships with power, and help to bring much-needed safety into our world.

Every choice you make to not hurt someone today - yourself or others - for what you experienced long ago in your childhood, makes your world and our world safer, today and in the future.

This five-part teleconference will utilize a talk, readings from the book Power Abused, Power Healed and articles by Judith Barr, and group and individual experiential work, all to help participants take some steps in exploring the theme of abuse of power in the healing professions, and its effect on the safety of our lives, the lives of our clients, and the life of our world.

It is Judith’s hope that through this series, participants will feel safe within themselves and within the group to explore the roots and the impact of the misuse and abuse of power, especially in places where we believe we are safe, in our childhood homes, our classrooms, our houses of worship, our therapists’ offices.
