Treatment of Military PTSD: Evidence-Based Exposure Therapy, Clinical Tools, and Emerging Methods

Presented by Peter W. Tuerk, PhD on 03-31-2017 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

World events over the last few decades have had a profound impact on the mental health of our military service members and veterans. As a result, many clinicians are seeking more in-depth training opportunities to develop a better understanding of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its treatment as it relates to veterans and people in the military.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Peter Tuerk will summarize the theoretical and empirical support underlying evidence-based exposure therapy for PTSD in military and veteran-related populations. He will present an in-depth working understanding of the drivers of PTSD pathology to aid clinicians in distinguishing PTSD from a variety of other mental health difficulties and to assist in appropriate treatment selection.

Drawing on clinical training experiences in Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, Dr. Tuerk will provide attendees with a summary of the Prolonged Exposure therapy protocol, including its strengths and weaknesses in standard care clinical settings. He will also present a range of therapeutic techniques that can support treatment engagement and treatment effectiveness. Lastly, this web conference will consider cutting-edge methods and technologies geared to augmenting and individualizing evidence-based PTSD protocols.

This intermediate web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Develop a working knowledge of the latest clinical science outcomes regarding PTSD care for military service members and veterans.
  2. Demonstrate skills in the differential diagnosis of PTSD and related problems.
  3. Discuss Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy protocol, including its strengths and weaknesses in standard care settings.
  4. Apply PTSD theory and directive therapeutic techniques to guide treatment progression.
  5. Describe methods to facilitate effective treatment engagement.
  6. Develop an understanding of next-generation methods to improve and individualize evidence-based PTSD treatment.
