What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I truly love being able to help people make changes in their lives. Change is hard and often scary. I help change to be less scary for people which is a wonderful feeling for me. As a therapist I get to witness people's struggles and their joys. I am allowed to be a part of my clients' lives for a period of time and help them become the people who they want to be. What can be greater than that? Since I was in my early 20's I would go to parties and cookouts and gain a wealth of information from strangers. I was constantly surprised by what people would tell me about themselves without me even asking. I've come to understand that this is one of my gifts. I have the ability to make people feel comfortable and want to tell me about themselves. There's no greater way to use this gift than to be a therapist.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

The most important part of choosing a therapist is deciding if you feel comfortable with the person. Credentials, training, and experience are important, but the MOST important thing is whether or not you like the person. If you don't like the therapist then you won't trust them and you won't talk about what you need to talk about. Schedule a free consultation to see if it's a good fit, to see if it "feels right" before making the financial and time commitment to therapy.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Many people but Black people especially don't take to the idea of talking to a stranger about their business. I understand because I'm also a private person. But therapy is different. Therapy isn't putting your business in the street for others to hear and judge. Therapy is a space just for you to figure out what you need to change so that you can be happier. Yes, therapy begins by talking to a stranger, a therapist, to me. But you will quickly see how talking to me is about having a conversation. It's a conversation where I will be understanding and direct, I will ask you questions so that you can begin to make changes to have the life that you want.
