My Approach to Helping
I recently moved to Texas after residing in West Virginia for 16 years. In West Virginia I had a private practice called Empowerment Therapy. I chose "Empowerment Therapy" because my goal in therapy for most people is to elicit change. I want to help people feel better so that they can make changes that will enable them to live happier, healthier and more productive lives. I joke with people that I was a cheerleader in my youth and continue to cheer on people by using therapeutic techniques.

It is scary to make an appointment to see a therapist. By making an appointment you are admitting to yourself that you need help. I have been counseling people for the last 22 years and I believe that my ability to make people feel at ease and comfortable in my office is my greatest asset.

Over the years I have heard from my clients that they thought it would be much scarier to go to a therapist. So if you are struggling with an issue and think you need someone to talk to, please realize that only the first few moments will be uncomfortable. By the end of the intake you will be eagerly looking forward to the next appointment.

We all need someone to talk to at times. Problems become much less scary when they are shared with someone else. By holding our problems in and not discussing them they get bigger and end up interfering with our sleep, appetite and ability to cope.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

People are fascinating. Most days I marvel that I have the privelege of being invited into peoples lives and that they put their trust in me to help them get over hurdles or solve a problem that has been plaguing. What a gift. When one of "my people" start doing better and make some necessary changes it really is thrilling. To meet someone in despair and watch them grow and become less burdoned is inspiring. I can't imagine having a more fullfilling career.
