Values Clarification

Values are a guide for decisions as to what is right, good and true. They are best described as behavioral standards and needs that work to support a person's purpose and vision. Values clarification is a technique to help someone relate their feelings and increase their awareness of their own values. Values clarification offers reflection on personal moral dilemmas at which point values may be analyzed. Values clarification is not only important for self-improvement and well-being but also in interactions with others. Values clarification is vital to internal and external success.

Values Clarification in Psychotherapy

Values clarification techniques are often used as part of psychotherapy. Psychotherapists use values clarification exercises to help clients learn more about themselves and to help clients make and accomplish goals. Psychotherapy allows for a proactive environment in which clients may clarify their values and understand their personal motivations and characteristics. Inability to clarify values may cause stress and depression as well as anxiety. These depressive symptoms may lead to physical health issues such as high blood pressure and poor overall physical health. Depressive or anxiety symptoms may lead to diagnosis of psychological problems that may be treated.
