Adolescence can be a very tumultuous time and a challenging one for many families. Parenting a teenager can be quite different than parenting a child. Navigating the process toward a healthy adulthood requires communication, understanding, perseverance, and a lot of support. The many tasks of adolescence have additional stressors for today's teens and families with the addition of social media, gaming, and other computer related activities.
I have worked with adolescents and their families for over 20 years and I continue to be passionate about this work. I consider it a privilege to help young people with their emotional and social development and assist in the navigation of their journey.
Establishing a relationship is paramount and the building of trust. I am very direct, non-judgemental and honest in my work and I use my humor and personality to build that trusting relationship so kids can open up and really talk about their difficulties and struggles and fears.
I am flexible in my approach and philosophy of treatment. I do not adhere to any one modality and prefer to blend various approaches that are strength-based and action-oriented. Learning from doing, trying out new behaviors, attempting new challenges are encouraged and supported. I also believe the past is important; not to dwell unnecessarily on past issues but rather to explore patterns, any existing past trauma, and family history.
I maintain the issues bringing one to treatment such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, anger have a connection to the other aspects of the individual. Family, peer, school and work relationships, physical well-being, and the connections to the community are included. As such I am collaborative with other professionals when needed and with the consent of the individual or family. I speak with guidance counselors, physicians, school officials, other therapists, or whomever may be deemed helpful.
I always see the teen with their parent(s) for the first appointment. How we proceed from there depends on many factors. I will see a teen alone for individual work and have family participate when warranted and I see some teens with family on a regular basis.

I earned a BS in Community and Family Services from University of Delaware, Masters in Social Work from University of Pennsylvania, and Certification in Secondary Guidance Counseling from Villanova University.
I have worked as a juvenile probation officer and school counselor for an alternative high school before entering into private practice.

More Info About My Practice

The practice I belong to runs 7 different therapy groups a week for teens and young adults. The group process can be a powerful and rich experience for adolescents. Connecting with peers experiencing similar struggles and sharing their stories and selves helps to feel better understood and less alone. We have both female and co-ed teen groups as well as a group for young women struggling with post high school issues and another for young women in their 20's.
