Are you looking for help with some issue involving a relationship? Maybe you would like some new tools for clarifying communications with a partner, a parent, adult child, co-worker, or friend. Or would you like some help getting over a loss? Perhaps you are single, looking for a new approach to relating. I also work with individuals seeking guidance in managing a difficult partner. Because I use proven, research-based methods, many cases reach resolution fairly quickly. Sometimes just a few consultations suffice to get my clients what they need.

I am driven by a commitment to help people get along better. When we are able to really listen to one another, pretty much everyone's story makes sense. This helps us all steer clear of shaming and blaming. In session, we even laugh a little when it seems appropriate. Because we are all different, the help I provide is tailored to each case. I celebrate our diversity. All cultures and lifestyles have always been welcomed in my practice.

More Info About My Practice

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Gottman Method, and Process-Oriented Psychology provide the theoretical core of my practice. Because each case is different, my clients' stated goals and their individual processes guide us more than theory ever can.

A mindfulness meditation practice of forty-five years supports the focus I bring to each session.

I try to meet the needs of my busy clients. To better serve them, I offer hours at three locations: Downtown Berkeley and, in San Francisco, in the Financial District and the Laurel Heights neighborhood.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Couples' communication, crises to partnerships (such as betrayals like infidelity and other deceptions), and healing unresolved grief and early life trauma as they affect present-day relationships are among the issues I have specific training in and over 20 years' experience successfully treating.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

Let us all agree that there are some serious mental disorders. But too often in the practice of therapy, very natural responses to life situations are rendered as disorders. I don't see it that way. How can something be called a "disorder" when nearly all the members of a population react to a type of stress in much the same way? It is not disorder; it is being human and trying to cope with the stressors of living. Let us instead empower people to make better choices. Then let us applaud their courage as they liberate themselves from old patterns.
