How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
Helping others to experience personal healing and transformation has always been my life purpose. So I believe that all of the challenges in my life related to grief, loss, and trauma and the profound healing that I have experienced were designed to prepare me to be an effective therapist. My healing has come from being a client in psychotherapy at different points in time and also from a profound spiritual transformation. These experiences allow me to have greater empathy and compassion for my clients and to know for sure that everyone has the potential to experience emotional healing and overall well-being.
Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance
Research has consistently shown that the relationship between the client and therapist is more important to the healing process than any specific treatment or technique. Clients must feel as if the therapist respects and understands them, is nonjudgmental, and is authentic. If clients do not feel this, they will not trust the therapist enough to reveal their most intimate thoughts and feelings. Without this trust, healing does not occur.
I am a multicultural counselor-knowledgeable about how cultural factors such as age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion and gender identity influence my worldview (perception of and feelings about oneself and others in the world) and that of my clients. It helps me to be the therapist required to provide these conditions necessary for trust and healing. This knowledge is integrated into all aspects of the counseling process (understanding of your concerns and treatment techniques) so that you receive the highest quality of counseling services available.
