More Info About My Practice

Before joining Fairfax Mental Health & Wellness, I spent five years working in an alternative middle school as a Therapeutic Day Treatment specialist. I worked with children who have intensive emotional and behavioral problems that were suspended from their base school. These children had a variety of problems, such as inattention, hyperactivity, poor impulse control, truancy, defiance towards authority figures, unresolved anger, depression, lack of motivation, anxiety, learning difficulties, lack of confidence, and peer rejection. The ultimate goal for these children is often to return to their base school. However, these children must learn the necessary skills and coping strategies in order to manage their behavior more appropriately at school. I provided a safe and empathic environment for these children to express their strong negative emotions and thoughts about their struggles at home, in the school, and out in the community. Many times these children do not feel listened to or understood, so they act out. In addition, I provided them with positive feedback about their strengths and any improvements they made towards reaching their individual specific goals. It is important to begin with small and reachable goals, so that these children feel successful. Furthermore, I consulted with teachers and other school staff about these children?s behaviors in the classroom to better understand what is preventing them from effectively learning.

Prior to working in the middle school setting, I worked in a community mental health setting providing therapeutic services and psychoeducational assessments to children, adolescents, and adults. These individuals sought out therapy for various reasons, such as depression, anxiety, disruptive behaviors and school problems, stress and anger management, trauma, work adjustment problems, relational problems, or grief and bereavement. I often provided outpatient therapeutic services to adults, whereas I provided wraparound services to children and adolescents within the home, at school, or in the community. Therapeutic services often focused on promoting positive growth, learning better coping skills, reducing problematic behavior, improving all types of relationships, adjusting to various life stressors, and improving overall daily functioning.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Psychological testing is an evaluation process where a battery of tests are administered to identify and clarify a diagnosis. I then will score and interpret the results and compile them into a comprehensive report. Psychological testing helps to quantify qualitative information. Psychological testing can assess problems related to ADHD, processing problems, Asperger's/Autism Spectrum, depression, and anxiety.
