I work with couples and individuals. Therapy happens in a slightly different way for each but with the same basic tenets. I believe in the transformative power of relationship and in collaborating with you to achieve the goals you set. I find that most issues start with very understandable attempts to protect yourself from loss, or shame, or lack of control in your life. In the process, you may be cutting yourself off from a fuller life and more satisfying relationships.
For individuals: Healing happens in the connection between you and your therapist. Therapy is a special kind of relationship different from any other in your life. You are fully accepted for who you are right now today, and yet we are also working together to bring changes into your life. You are probably trying to solve today's problems with strategies that no longer apply today. You may be protecting yourself from dangers from the past and missing out on connections you can be making in your life today. You will experience a safe holding environment that will help you explore new ways to do things. You know your life, abilities, and relationships. My expertise is in the process and nature of growth and change, individually and in relationship, and in how to support you as you make change.

More Info About My Practice

Couples: It is known that the average couple struggles with their relationship for six years before seeking help. By that time the battle lines are drawn and the problems may seem impossible. There is a new science of relationships that tells us how to help couples come back together and find the connection they so fervently want. You'll read that the problem is communication. People will offer exercises in "I statements" and active listening. We know from brain scan technology that when we cannot turn to a romantic partner for comfort and safety, the brain sends out strong signals of danger. Those signals make reasoned and engaged conversation very difficult.
I will support you in a safe environment to recognize and undo the negative cycle that keeps you stuck in "demon dialogues". We will work to calm your brain and make it possible for you to reach for each other again. See my web site for a detailed explanation of emotionally focused couples therapy.

Psychological trauma can be a crippling problem for individuals and within couples. I have special training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) for working with trauma. It is a body based talking therapy that looks views the body as a source of information and a pathway to healing. SP demystifies the trauma's puzzling symptoms (both physical and psychological). See my web site for more information.
