Is your child or teen anxious, sad, depressed, or acting out? Does he or she seem to be struggling with low self-esteem, bullying, or friendship/school challenges? Or perhaps you have seen behavioral changes you are concerned about. As a parent, if you are worried about your child, the earlier you intervene with counseling the better. Children do best with play/art therapy because it's very hard for them to explain intellectually how they're feeling and what's going on. My play therapy office is loved by all the kids who come there. We focus on play involving games, art, puppets, role play, and sand tray as a means for them to communicate in an experiential way. It may not sound like the counseling you're used to as an adult, but for children this is the way we know how best to help them express themselves. I see children from 5 years old and up.

More Info About My Practice
I feel counseling work with children is a sacred endeavor. My approach is a gentle and positive one, and we bring laughter into our sessions whenever possible. It has such a strong healing force. Kids tell me I'm easy to talk to and they feel deeply cared for. Teens like my straight talk and respectful manner. My previous career in education as a school and college counselor is helpful in understanding many of their academic and social issues. Younger children are very drawn to me perhaps because they sense how sincerely interested I am in them. My schedule allows for weekend appointments, which is often helpful for kids.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I've experienced the loss of divorce, the joy of remarriage, and the complexity of the blended family--all of which help me relate to many of the problems faced by the families. I'm very familiar with IEPs, 504 plans, and working with at-risk kids in school who can benefit from special services or may want to explore other academic options. As a Gestalt therapist, I place emphasis on awareness and immediate experience. At the same time, I integrate CBT and DBT skills along with mindfulness practice, when appropriate.
