Someone asked me once how I can sit there all day and listen to those sad stories. The question startled me as I had never thought of my work as a counsellor in that way. I realized, secondly, that I actually hear a lot of stories so courage as people share the challenges that life has brought them. I continue to be amazed by the courage and resilience of the people that come to me. I believe firmly that the person is not the problem, the couple is not the problem, the family is not the problem ... the problem is the problem!
I also believe that everyone is capable of growth and that change is inevitable. The human task is to recognize the possibilities that one has even in the midst of whatever problem is afflicting the family or individual. The counsellor's role is to help the person/s recognize those possibilities, even if they seem small, and to step into them, even if the steps are little. Most of the changes that we look for in life start out very small, and we seek to recognize, accept and move with those changes.

More Info About My Practice
As a couples therapist, I seek to understand and help people recognize their relational patterns, the forces driving them, and the underlying desires for mattering and belonging to each other.
As a family therapist, I seek to understand the relational patterns, the family life cycle issues, and the underlying family events that may be contributing the problem. Small changes can lead to big changes.
My Therapy Focus
My first question is always about a person's goals for coming to therapy. This is not a question that I as a counsellor can answer, but I can help the person answer it. I'm always interested in the stories that persons tell abouot their problems. It's in the telling of the stories that problems will be defined, and solutions developed.
Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
All of us have been shaped by the relationships to which we have belonged. A good relationship with a good couonsellor becomes just another of those relationships.
The power of words in a compassionate conversation is the basic treatment that brings the change that's desired.
