Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
My education and experience have honed my skills in crisis and trauma, grief and loss, couples, marriage, family, LGBT, transgender issues, stress, anxiety, depression, and much more. I have worked with individuals, couples, families, and groups in addition to Military, Law Enforcement, EMS, Firefighters, and other first responders including ER medical professionals.
As a crisis counselor and general therapist I worked with victims of crime, child abuse, disaster survivors, marriage and couple issues, blended families, coming out and other LGBT issues, gender reassignment, anxiety, depression, dissociative disorders, and many other issues.
As a sexual assault counselor I worked with male and female adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and adult sexual assault victims.
As a grief counselor I worked with those who lost children, parents, partners and other loved ones to suicide, homicide, accidents, and natural causes.
How Psychotherapy Can Help
I have had the pleasure of watching people grow, heal and thrive in many different capacities. I have more often seen people find peace, self-awareness, lighten the weight on their shoulders and find overall healing. People have reported healthier relationships, better communication, happier experiences, better care for self, finding their authentic self, shedding the burdens, clearing their minds, discarding the learned things from their past that no longer serve them and so much more! The process is not always easy but the payoff is well worth the effort!
My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
The purposes of therapy can be many! Therapy can be to learn more about who you are, why you do the things you do or change something in your life. The purpose can be to heal trauma or process grief. It can be for maintenance or "check in" with a counselor like an oil change for your car. Therapy can be to heal addiction or heal the past. It can be to hit the "reset" button and start over by making or adjusting to changes in your direction of life, like coming out, changing jobs, having kids, getting married, working on anger management, grief work or any number of things. Therapy can validate where you are and who you are and help bring understanding to self. Really, therapy can be for just about anything you want or need!
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
It is a privilege to be chosen! For someone to trust me enough to give me a change to help feels wonderful! I love being shown the puzzle pieces of someone's life to help them put together the picture of their existence. Together we examine that picture and eliminate what doesn't belong, polish the tarnished, repair the damaged, and bring enlightenment, growth and healing along the way. There is great satisfaction in seeing someone gain insight and introspection and the healing settle in. It really is quite wonderful when someone trusts you to help and then we actually do the work and there is healing and growth. It's powerful to witness!
