My Approach to Helping

Robert A. Feuer, MA, LCP, (Bob) is a Psychoanalyst and Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist with over 37 years of clinical experience helping people change and grow to improve their lives and relationships. I am past-President of the Greater Kansas City-Topeka Psychoanalytic Center where I also serve on the Psychoanalytic Institute teaching faculty. I create a warm, safe, and therapeutic environment for adults and adolescents struggling with mood, anxiety, adjustment, and relationship issues. We are products of our genetics and environment, and we cause neither. Our task is to make the best of the life we were given. If our default, automatic-pilot ways of being in the world no longer work for us, counseling with an understanding and experienced psychotherapist can help.

I promote a reflective, thoughtful and nonjudgmental approach as we examine problems together: what helped create them, what sustains them, and what helps resolve them. My therapy focus combines insight with action so that my clients consider new behavioral approaches that complement new healthier ways of thinking and feeling.

I am sensitive to individuals, couples, and families who wish for complete confidentiality regarding their mental health treatment. If you chose not to use insurance, there will be no external record of your issues, diagnosis, and treatment (information that insurance companies require for billing and determination of medical necessity).

I invite you to call and schedule an initial psychotherapy session to see if we are a good fit to begin our important work together.

More Info About My Practice

Sessions are $200 for the first 45-minute appointment and $175 for all subsequent 45-minute appointments (whether they are for individual, couples, or family therapy). We are happy to file out-of-network claims for your insurance company so that you may be reimbursed for covered services.

My Therapy Focus

All of us are products of our genetics and environment, and we cause neither. Our task is to make the best of the life we were given. If our natural, default, automatic-pilot ways of being in the world are working for us, that's great. If we struggle with problems that we are not naturally well-equipped to deal with, counseling and therapy can help.

I strive to create a warm, supportive, safe therapeutic environment so that my clients and I can become sensitive observers who evaluate new ways of conceptualizing and coping with difficult issues and situations. I promote a thoughtful and nonjudgmental approach as we examine difficulties together, whether I am working with individuals, couples or families. My therapy focus combines insight with action so that my clients consider new behavioral approaches that complement new healthier ways of thinking. My therapeutic orientation is therefore a good mix of cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and psychodynamic therapy perspectives enacted through a down-to-earth conversational approach. Basically, we sit and talk, reflecting on current problems and issues and how they often make sense as the unintended side-effects of trying to meet less obvious (sometimes unconscious) goals or agendas. When we become more conscious and aware of our automatic-pilot ways of being (and more aware of their function and purpose), we become freer to make conscious choices that help us more effectively pursue what we really want in life.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

It is important to find an understanding therapist who will work to empower and support you as you work toward improving your happiness and life satisfaction. I provide a range of treatment from brief psychotherapy to deep, intensive, longer-term psychoanalysis to assist individuals, couples, and families in addressing the stresses and developmental issues that that can be difficult to overcome. My goal is to help you become more aware of your choices and options in the midst of your current life circumstances to facilitate real change and personal growth. I will help you transform new insights and awareness into positive action for a more effective and fulfilling life.
