Therapy is a natural extension of activism. For some, maybe you, the act of existing visibly and authentically is radical.
I work with survivors of sexual trauma (rape, incest, sexual assault, sexual harassment, etc.) and with folks who are transgender, genderqueer, non-binary or questioning their experience of gender. The reason this work is an extension of activism is simple: everyone has the fundamental right to feel comfortable and safe in their body. Everyone.
I'm often asked if you need to be currently working on one of these specific issues to work with me. The answer is no. Sometimes, however, as a survivor or a member of the LGBTQIA community knowing that your therapist is a safe place where your trauma, your sexuality or your gender is accepted and understood can be the first necessary step to establishing a trusting relationship.
In my office, whether virtual or in person, my goal is to get you in the driver's seat of your emotional processes. The first step to that is often developing awareness. Depending on your history and unique situation that looks differently.
Establishing awareness, whether through a traditional meditation practice or a simple grounding-in-the-present moment coping skill, is the first step in creating change. You have the innate wisdom to heal and thrive. My role is to help you access it.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
Therapy can carry a stigma in our culture. That's one of the things I'd most like to change. Asking for help when you need it is one of the hardest things anybody has to do. Therefore, by definition, therapy does not mean you are weak it means you have courage and the strength of spirit to seek real and lasting change.
Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance
What research tells us is the most important part about therapy is the goodness-of-fit, or the relationship, between the therapist and client. This one variable is more indicative of a therapy being effective or not than modality, location, or anything else. Just as wounds develop within relationship, so are those wounds healed. I generally consider the first three sessions a trial period where you are getting to know me, I am getting to know you and we're getting on the same page about what the job is that you're hiring me to do. We are sussing out whether or not we are a good fit for the work you are coming to therapy to do. It is my ethical obligation to be honest with you if I believe you will be better served with another therapist. Likewise, you have an obligation to yourself to find a therapist that works for you, even if that means it isn't me. This foundation of trust and choice is essential to establishing care.
