I believe that people do the best they can with the knowledge, skills, and ways of coping that they've got, but distress occurs when those are not enough to conquer multiple problems in multiple areas. I help people decide what is working for them and what isn't and where they need additional tools. Then I teach people how to use the tools and support them as they practice them in their daily lives. My approach is eclectic, based on Multimodal Therapy (Lazarus)and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Linehan). I have years of experience working with people living with severe and persistent mental illness, including dual diagnosis (mental illness and substance abuse/dependence) in both outpatient and residential settings. I believe that people are resilient and can make positive changes, even in difficult circumstances.

More Info About My Practice

My fee for individual therapy (not comprehensive DBT therapy) is $150 for a 50-minute session. While I am an out-of-network provider for all insurance companies, I can provide you with a specialized receipt ("superbill") that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if your insurance covers the service. My practice is in downtown Willow Glen, two blocks from Lincoln Ave. There is plenty of off-street parking. The office is on the 2nd floor and requires managing a flight of steps.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I have a special interest in supporting people with Lyme Disease and people who are considering (or have already had) bariatric [weight loss] surgery, because living with these physical conditions can cause a host of emotional challenges, many quite unexpected.

I work with people with Borderline Personality Disorder through my affiliation with Awake DBT Program (www.awakedbt.com), which is a comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy program in San Jose offering behavioral skills training coupled with individual therapeutic support. My colleagues and I have been intensively trained by Marsha Linehan and Shari Manning through Behavioral Tech, LLC, the training organization that Marsha Linehan, the developer of DBT, founded.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

Psychotherapy can help you learn to manage your anxiety, overcome your depression, and increase your communication skills at home and at work. It can also help you manage the major transitions that take place throughout life such as changing jobs, moving to a new area, creating a family, renegotiating relationships with adult children, retiring, grieving and dealing with chronic health problems.
