I hold the belief that we all have the resources within us needed to overcome whatever challenges we are facing, and that therapy can help to uncover those resources that have gotten lost or damaged along the way. My approach to therapy is to help you find your sense of empowerment and agency, so you can feel more capable and effective in your life. This might involve healing from painful experiences, discovering new parts of yourself that you didn't know existed, working through a process of grief and/or forgiveness, and a number of other possibilities depending on your circumstances. Most important to therapy is the relationship we build together. When we have a foundation of trust and security, it allows us to explore more aspects of your relational experience and understand what might be in the way of having the satisfying relationships you want.

More Info About My Practice

Along with individual and couples therapy, I provide group therapy and personality assessment services. I currently offer a group therapy for adults that focuses on experiences of loss, and how loss impacts ongoing relationships. For example, group members may be seeking to reconnect to others after becoming isolated in the midst of grief, or they may feel stuck and unable to move forward in life. The group experience offers the opportunity to examine how you relate to others as you process your loss, and allows you to try new ways of relating that can free you up to move forward.

For personality assessments, I meet with you for an initial interview to help you determine what questions you want answered, and then administer a variety of questionnaires or other measures to help you find your answers. You may be needing help understanding what you are experiencing emotionally and psychologically, or you may be lacking direction in terms of your career and want to know types of careers that fit with your personality. Additionally, I have experience providing personality assessments for clergy who are seeking ordination.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I have extensive training in working with experiences of trauma, abuse, and neglect, particularly with adults who experienced such difficulties in childhood. Many times this includes an element of grieving what was so painful, and ways you did not get what you needed from important others in your life. My work in this area has helped me develop a deep appreciation for the grieving process, and I also enjoy working with people who are struggling to cope with more recent experiences of loss (for example, the death of a loved one).

I have also received extensive training for working with spiritual and existential concerns. There are many ways this can be part of your therapy, depending on what spiritual views you hold and how much you want to include them in your treatment. Sometimes we might directly address a spiritual difficulty you are having, or ways your spirituality has been helpful in coping with your pain. Other times we may think more broadly about the meaning of suffering, or other existential ideas. Many times I have found that the most powerful and transformative therapy sessions have felt spiritual, even sacred. I greatly value these experiences, but I also respect your wish to include more or less spirituality in your therapy. It's most important that therapy feels like your space to use as you want and need.
