Do you find that you're somehow feeling disconnected from yourself? This disconnection often comes in the form of anxiety, or perhaps depression. Maybe on the surface the signs point to, "Things are fine. In fact, I really have nothing to be anxious or depressed about," and yet you are. Generally, when faced with this dilemma, we tend to try harder to convince ourselves that we are fine. We may make little changes, or add in more coping skills or self care, thinking it will, or should, bring us to a point of feeling better. Except it doesn't. The anxiety or uncertainly creeps back in.

Therapy can provide a space for you to understand this internal discomfort in new ways. Most of the time, when these internal states aren't changing, in spite of our best efforts, it's because there is something going on that we need to take a different look at. Many of my clients find that having a safe place to come and explore these often difficult feelings leads to helpful insights, and thus, more clarity for taking steps that work better for them.

How Psychotherapy Can Help

Over the course of life, our brains tend to settle into certain ways of problem solving, and most of the time this works out pretty well. If it's not working, or when this process breaks down, we can feel very stuck. If you are in this stuck place, psychotherapy can help you look at the situation from a fresh and different perspective. And, sometimes, this in and of itself creates room for clarity, change, and growth.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

There is a better alternative than "pushing through" hard situations. Therapy can help you discover what this alternative will be for you. The thing is that it does take strength and resilience to push through, and a great thing about therapy is that you can learn to use this strength to move into a more fulfilling way of living life.
