I came into this field after teaching music and art in private schools and in my own teaching studio for twenty years. I changed my career to psychology during the 'decade of the brain' because I wanted to understand why the brightest most gifted music and art students collapsed under the stress of 'coming of age' and moving to college. It was the 1990's and neuroscience was providing answers to questions psychotherapy had never been able to answer about why we repeat destructive behavioral patterns and relationships. We saw how 'adverse childhood events' formed the attachment style in the brain and how overwhelming events could derail emotional and social development throughout the lifespan.

As a psychotherapist, I want to offer creative problem solving strategies so that clients who become overwhelmed by circumstances can reclaim and recreate their lives at any developmental stage. I teach people to activate the 'right side of the brain' using music, visualization, creative movement, and writing to slow down their thoughts, get to their body, and express their feelings. Clients learn to 'capture and contain' rather than avoid and suppress emotions. They learn to 'monitor and modify' their behaviors using the expressive 'modes of perception' that are within us all. The BrainsmART approach connects the right brain's imagery with the left brain's words which enables clients to regulate their nervous system, balance emotions, and improve problem solving under stress.

More Info About My Practice

I am in-network with most commercial insurances from DevonHealth and Blue Cross to Magellan. I see clients of all ages and backgrounds and in order to service more people, I work with a Masters level supervisee who sees clientele on an out-of-network basis. We do your billing whether in network or out-of-network so that you get a fair re-imbursement for any out of pocket fees.

I am a certified clinical trauma professional with expertise in healing all forms of trauma. I work with clients whose self destructive behaviors were once 'adaptive' because they defended against the adverse childhood events or 'too much stress" occurring in their development.
My research focused on the psycho-biology of trauma and creativity, so that I could develop a BrainsmART approach to heal the brain, mind, and body. I offer strategic ways to re-wire' self destructive behaviors - including addictions, eating disorders and all forms of self harming. By 'activating' the creative brain, clients can learn to regulate their emotions and body and 'get to their words'.

I work with adults, teenagers and adolescents who have been abused, abandoned or neglected and who present with the same mood disorders and self-harming behaviors as veterans of war. Trauma is a word that we should not be afraid of because it is 'too much drama' that over time will produce alcoholism, drug addiction, personality disorders, disordered eating, anxiety, depression and uncontrollable mood swings. My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

I believe that the real purpose of psychotherapy is to provide a safe container in which each individual is given the time and space to 'know thyself'. Frequently people come to therapy for a clear 'circumstantial' reason soon to discover that there is deeper more internal distress that has brought them. For example, Individuals may come to therapy because their relationship has failed and they cannot stand the thought of 'being alone'. They cannot imagine surviving the break up so we work creatively with the difficult emotions and core beliefs discovering that they felt 'alone' throughout the relationship. Through creative pathways we find the roots of their paralyzing fear of 'being alone' come from the emotional abandonment they lived with throughout childhood. Psychotherapy can give people the creative strategies to 'see and move beyond' these overwhelming emotions .Psychotherapy is the 'safe container' in which any individual can stop repeating painful patterns of self talk and self-destructive behaviors with others. The highest purpose of psychotherapy is contained within the two root words of its name. Psyche is the Greek word for mind and soul and 'therapaie' refers to the 'curative process, power, or quality" that the mind and soul goes through. In our contemporary culture, the therapy suite should serve as a sanctuary where questions of body, mind, and soul can be explored safely and where individuals can heal as they seek meaning and purpose in their lives.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

Therapy is a commitment of time and energy where the focus is turned on one's inner personal growth It is not selfish but the opposite because 'looking in the mirror' is demanding and often emotionally difficult The skill of self-reflection is a learned skill - often not taught in the family or schools- but it is the foundation stone of real change and good therapy. The length of time that a client is in therapy cannot be measured by any outside standard. Together we monitor the pros and cons of each session with a feedback-informed approach, where I ask clients to 'score' each session in four domains. This helps me stay on track as clients commit to a minimum of sixteen sessions so they can learn, practice and install strategies and experience real change. Changes in behavior can only come from the client's ability to self-monitor (without judgment) and self modify (with patience). In all cases, clients need time to practice the skills for self-regulation and creative re-direction. They need time to identify their 'triggers' and time to re-route old impulsive reactions into creative action. Clients grow at different rates and gain insight according to their own cycles. I can see people weekly for several months as they break through old patterns. At some point we agree to 'try out their wings' and we reduce to bi-weekly and then monthly. I may see someone in a year to continue the dialogue. Bottom line, therapy is an interpersonal creative process, unique to each person.
