In sessions I'm active, engaged, and committed to working collaboratively. I want to help you develop new strategies and options while helping you move from distress and overwhelm to feeling more at ease and centered. I'll be asking you to tell me about the difficulties or goals that have led you to seek therapy, and I'll ask questions and share observations as we talk so we can be sure I really get it.

As we talk, I'll encourage you to observe what arises inside you, perhaps aspects of your experience that you may not typically take the time to notice (emotions, thoughts, sensations, impulses, etc). This will help us to explore the patterns, strategies, beliefs, and fears that operate outside of your awareness and can get in your way. We'll explore ways for you to gradually move beyond limiting patterns to allow for more flexible and creative options.

I have a specialization working with adults who are impacted in the present by experiences from the past. This can include major traumas as well as seemingly small incidents that continue to intrude and influence life in the present. Experiences of feeling overwhelmed, frightened, rejected, or out of control can lead to changes in our ability to feel calm yet energized. This may lead to chronically feeling too revved up or too slowed down, or shifting between these two modes. I help clients learn to regulate their nervous systems so that it's easier to remain even-keeled despite stressful circumstances.

Past experiences can also leave us with beliefs about ourselves or the world that get in our way (such as: I can't trust anyone, I'm helpless, I'm never enough, or I have to be perfect). I help clients gradually move beyond these limiting beliefs to more accurate assessments of the present.
