I believe that growth and happiness are available to each of us through coming to understand more clearly where we are and what we're facing - emotional and intellectual knowledge=power.
Our biology makes us to be social creatures and that can be a dilemma; knowing how to create satisfying connections with family, with mate, with true friends and in the workplace is needed. Knowing how to say no when necessary, how to get the other to agree or validate, and how to do all of this without worrying about losing my relationships allows connection with satisfaction.
Therapy and counseling ought to provide a venue for pursuing happiness and satisfaction while easing and even healing life's pains in a connected, responsive and caring environment. There are at once so many kinds of hurts that and yet something in common in them all -- and for all of us in the human condition. Listening to good music or seeing a great movie tells us that commonality is there.
In a speeding world full of demands the connection to me can get lost. Or the connection to those I need to love. I believe (and have seen) that needs can be met, words can be heard, one can be seen, connection can be found, my very self can be found again.

More Info About My Practice
My practice emphasizes close personal attention. I have offices in Skokie and at Rush University Medical Center. My practice has applied with Blue Cross to be an in-network provider. For other carriers we are out-of-network though we can file insurance claims on your behalf.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I work with simple to complicated cases where our clinic has been seen as a last hope for those who have had many disappointments in their treatment and search for help. This work includes major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and psychosis. I am familiar with addressing difficult problems and serious diagnoses. And also the kinds of problems with worries, frustration and elusive goals we all face in daily living.
How Psychotherapy Can Help
Feelings are (to me) non-verbal intelligence. My feelings are trying to tell me something. If I've been staying away from my feelings too long I can get out of touch of touch with them and rusty and knowing how to use them. Good therapy bridges feelings and thinking so that one gets relief.
We deal with important matters throughout our lifetimes. In the early years there can be important matters with nobody quite useful to be that sounding board and good friend or guide. Parents (or spouses) can sometimes err by either helping too much and becoming directive or helping too little -- just walking away. Or both! Learning how to give and receive connection that is neither too close nor too far away really helps.
Therapy is a chance to re-evaluate current problems -- including those that seem to be all too familiar to those encountered before.

I need to work over and over again to learn how to understand things in the way you do - to get it right - so that we can work together effectively.
On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
Remember that you don't have to go into great detail if it feels wrong. Sometimes just saying that something is wrong without trying right away to dive into all the details can help. Having a single appointment with a new therapist can tell you right away whether you feel like setting up another visit.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
Don't give up. Do your research. Find someone who is a better fit. And if your gut says something is wrong, listen. It can take time to find the right person, and it can be worth it.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Like real estate. Fit, fit and fit. I think if you take the time to look you'll find at least one professional who gets you and with whom you share a common language. Without fit its hard to get much done.
My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
Obviously genetic and bio-electro-chemical processes play a role. We are one one hand biological organisms that are meant to function is certain ways. I work closely with medical doctors in different specialties and have great respect for them and for the incredible work they do. Body and mind must be seen as two ways of looking at a unitary thing.
We have human experience and consciousness that are harder to explain. Social, environmental and psychological factors play a great role - especially those at work in early development.
I believe that while hurts take many forms they often have human causes and respond to human remedies.
I like Thomas Szasz quote re-framing "mental disorder" as problems with living. Its part of the deal to have problems sometimes; with collaboration and support problems find solutions.
