About Lenexa

Lenexa is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas. It was founded in 1869 and spans a land area of 34 square miles. Lenexa is sometimes called “The City of Festivals” for its many celebrations throughout the year.

There are 53,600 people living in Lenexa, 95% of whom are American citizens. Roughly 3,100 residents are military veterans. Fifty-five percent of adults 25 years and older have completed at least a bachelor’s degree.  

The population of Lenexa is 81% white, 8% Hispanic, 5% black, and 3% Asian. Around 8% of residents are foreign-born, and 10% speak a foreign language at home. There are 2,600 Spanish speakers, 300 Hindi speakers, and 300 Arabic speakers in Lenexa. 

The average yearly income in Lenexa is $39,700. The homeownership rate is 64%. Six percent of Lenexa residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Lenexa

The Lenexa Police Department has adopted various strategies to assist residents with mental health issues. One such strategy is Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). The purpose of CIT is to educate officers on various mental health conditions and equip them with the skills needed to defuse a crisis. By mid-2016, over 40% of Lenexa police officers had been trained.

The Lenexa Police Department has also joined the Johnson County co-responder program. The program allows for a mental health professional to accompany police officers when they respond to a mental health call. A primary goal of the program is to help guide individuals with mental health challenges into treatment and away from jail.
