I believe that, ultimately, we all want to feel comfortable in our own skin and competent in handling whatever life throws at us. As I listen to your story, I pay attention to the ways in which you feel uncomfortable or incompetent, as well as the strategies you've developed to manage or cover up these feelings. Perhaps you've already realized that some of these strategies are no longer helpful, but you haven't been able to let go of them. Or perhaps you're not yet aware of what might be keeping you stuck.
As we explore your experience of being stuck, the real work begins: letting go of the thought, behavior, and relationship patterns that perpetuate your distress. In my experience, these patterns don't usually respond to direct and forceful efforts at change. But I've found that you can loosen their grip as you learn to notice the patterns without judgment, and develop curiosity and compassion toward yourself and others.
While the ultimate goal is achieving a greater sense of competence and comfort in your own skin, you may also find that you're better able to tolerate moments of discomfort when they do arise.

More Info About My Practice
I have been a member of the Lakeview Center for Psychotherapy cooperative for over 10 years. The Lakeview Center is 3 blocks from the Paulina Brown Line stop in West Lakeview, in a century-old 3-flat building. I have been told that my office is comfortable and cozy, and that people appreciate the homey atmosphere.
Because my office is on the 3rd floor, I am not a good choice for anyone who has trouble with steps. There is metered street parking in front of our building, as well as free daytime parking on residential side streets.
I am in the Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO network, out-of-network for all other PPOs.
How Psychotherapy Can Help
If you feel like something is wrong but have not been able to identify a specific problem, or if you feel despair even though you believe you "should" be happy, then you might find psychotherapy helpful. Many people I've worked with come to therapy believing there is something deeply wrong with them for not being happy. They want to fix themselves so that they can get to the "good stuff" they assume everyone else has. If this sounds familiar, you may appreciate the opportunity therapy provides to slow down and notice how your thoughts and feelings, and the stories you tell yourself about them, contribute to your distress.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
Building a life can be both a wonderful and overwhelming experience. I feel great compassion for my clients, and I stand in awe of their courage in the face of often intense emotional pain. I am honored to join them in their process of self-exploration and growth.
